Trip to Sticky Waterfalls – Family Memory Unlocked

In blog, family friends, motivation, travel, vlog by Michael Michelini

Life is short, and you’ve got to make the most of it. The Sticky Waterfalls has been on our family trip list for a while, and with Wendy in Japan (and not interested in this adventure), we seized the opportunity to visit while she was away.

A Unique Adventure in Chiang Mai

The Sticky Waterfalls, officially known as Bua Thong Waterfalls, is a free national park located about an hour’s drive from Chiang Mai’s city center. We hired a private driver to take Miles, Maggie, my father-in-law (Grandpa!), and me to this unique destination. A few other families joined us, making it a lively group outing.

A Fun and Sticky Experience

We arrived around 2 p.m., and our driver waited until 4 p.m. Initially, I worried two hours wouldn’t be enough, but it turned out to be the perfect amount of time. The waterfall’s “sticky” white rocks, made of limestone, allow you to climb up without slipping, even as water flows around you. It sounds daunting—climbing a waterfall—but it’s surprisingly safe and fun!

Maggie was nervous at first, but once she felt the grip of the sticky rocks, her confidence grew. The water flows gently, and the unique texture of the rocks makes it an exhilarating yet secure climb.

Pro Tip: My camera got splashed while recording—luckily, it wasn’t submerged, but be cautious with electronics near the water! My camera got splashed while recording—luckily, it wasn’t submerged, but be cautious with electronics near the water!

Exploring the Waterfall Trails

The park offers three or four different “tracks,” which are essentially entry points along the same waterfall path. The longest route starts at the base of the waterfall, where you climb various paths up to the top of the park (near the entrance). Each trail offers a slightly different perspective, but all lead to the same rewarding experience.

Travel Tips for Visiting Sticky Waterfalls

  • Bring swimwear and a change of clothes: You’ll get wet, so pack dry clothes for the ride back.
  • Timing: Two hours is plenty to enjoy the waterfall, but arrive early to avoid crowds.
  • Protect your gear: Keep electronics in waterproof bags to avoid water damage.
  • Footwear: Water shoes with good grip are ideal for climbing.

A Core Family Memory

This trip was a blast and created a core family memory we’ll treasure for years. The Sticky Waterfalls is a must-visit on your Chiang Mai bucket list. It’s an affordable, fun, and unforgettable adventure for families, friends, or solo travelers.

Recommendation: Add the Sticky Waterfalls to your Chiang Mai itinerary—you won’t regret it!
