Does China Want Foreigners to Leave? Facebook Blocked Twitter Blocked

July 7, 2009

Well, I am gonna rant a little bit, a bit of a short post, but hoping to get some comments and feedback.

Maybe its not China wanting to unwelcome foreigners…but by the government controlling what is said, and how you can say it, it doesnt give foreigners that warm and fuzzing feeling inside.

I guess while I am upset about this, it makes me understand the frustrations of the chinese people. They are supressed on what news and information that comes from the outside world. Of course, the younger and new generation is much more open and aware of the outside world and what is going on, but there are clear differences generation to generation.

Just wonder. I know a few of my foreign friends in china already seriously considering moving out due to this higher then usual regulation of information

Ditto! I own a virtual assistant business and we promote to all social networking sites and blogs like FB, Twitter, Technorati, Xanga, Blogspot, WordPress, Multiply.. Guess what?? All of these sites are blocked from China.

Now, I’m shutting down my business. Five chinese employees would be jobless.

Oh well!!

Guangyao( Tristan ) - 07/15/2009 Take it easy. They will be come back.

c88p - 07/19/2009 As much as not having Facebook and Youtube is disapointing, it’s really not that big a deal. The main frustration I have as a foreigner living in China is just not understanding why any government would want to shield it’s people from world opinion, and also from making international friendships.

In one breath China says it wants to be a global player, and in action they isolate themselves from the rest of the world. I suppose amidst all the theories I hear from both Chinese friends, and foeigners here, we may never know the real motive for this behavior… another frustration… sigh!

sean - 09/13/2009 If they wanted people to leave they would just stop extending visa`s or make new regualtions or block MSN, it has nothing to do with facebook doh!!

Michael Michelini - 09/13/2009 doh! well, its not exactly giving foreigners an incentive to invest.
