Don’t Quit Poem

I love it when my friends tell me they enjoy reading the blog. I just like to tell my life story online, and it helps me get down on paper the ideas and feeling in my head, it also allows others to get inspired, or a LAUGH, then that is amazing to me.

My friend Aditya Damodaran whom I went to Stevens Tech with shared this poem with me today, and I thought it would be great to post here:

The Don’t Quit Poem

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must–but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
That many a fighter turns about
When he might have won had he stuck to the bout;
Don’t give up, though the pace seems slow
You might succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to the faint and faltering man
Often the vanquished has given up
When he might have captured the victors cup.
And he learns too late, when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit
It’s when things seem worst that you must NOT quit.CLINTON HOWELL (see comments)

I think the main point of this poem to me, is that when things get hard, and you feel you want to quit – THIS IS THE EXACT MOMENT you need to fight and work harder. Because that is the point where the majority of others would give up. So in order to excel, in order to be better and above the average, you need to break through those points where you feel self doubt.

and it is true – THE BIGGEST PERSON HOLDING YOU BACK IS YOURSELF – if you believe you can do something, then it can be done. You make up excuses, in your head, why things are not possible, or you internally blame someone else for your own limitations. Sure, maybe someone else doesn’t want you to reach a certain goal, or pass them in a certain task – but it is not them stopping you – IT IS YOUR OWN INTERNAL FEELINGS holding you back.

So, I have it, and I am sure you have it as well, those bad days, when nothing seems to go right, when you just want to give up. Those are the days you have to fight into weakness, and break through…..to go above and beyond – because if we can convince ourselves it is possible, then it IS.
