I believe everyone realizes I am past due on a vacation…and finally I got one, whether I wanted it or not! Spent the whole day saturday traveling from Puerto Galera to Boracay, just for the record: Full day of traveling on Saturday: 6:30am wake up in Muelle pier, Puerto Galera. Boat leaves ON time 7am, but not a direct boat, it has to make a stop at Sabang pier before Arrive in Batangas port 9am, trying to catch a 12:20pm departure Manila to Boracay, In Batangas, try to save time to get a taxi, but so many hustlers changing prices … Continue reading A Real Vacation, Trip to Boracay, But a Struggle To Get There + Back!
Writing this from the bus in Batangas, finally able to “escape” the island of Puerto Galera. Over 2 days delayed from leaving due to typhoon missing my friend Bas’s birthday in Dau, and a few other tropical MBA attendees missing their flights tio thailand and korea….and I really hope I don’t miss my flight today to Boracay (12:20pm departure, typing this on a bus there at 9:40am, so should be ok) as this will be my real holiday in years! But even if I miss my flight, I can make a one way flight….meet up with MikeMo and Attila there. … Continue reading Delayed Departure May Have Been Worth It
Tonight had a rather long meeting with my Philippines accountant and Marie about converting the startup office into an internet cyber cafe “CyberCafe.com Inc”. For the most of 2010 I have been “dabbling” with doing business in the Philippines…..having home based workers, leasing a small startup office, training programs, interviews at Philippines government centers, and running a quick twitter social media meetup…..just took about a year to figure it out. I have been investing a lot of time and money here – training, hiring, buying computers. LEARNING, submerging into the culture. Learning about the people, the way people work. Transportation … Continue reading Converting Philippines Office into Clear Cafe Internet Cyber Cafe!
Its also bee good timing for me to be in the Philippines, as my goddaughter, Charlotte’s birthday was just this weekend. Seeing Charlotte, with her parent’s Bas and Maritess, make me think of my first time back in the Philippines for her baby christening in Feb 2009. Charlotte has been over to Shenzhen a couple times too. Have stopped over to see them a few times since then, weekend trips to see Charlotte. I am really getting too familiar with the local transportation systems in Manila! Worked Friday night and then took a jeepney to Cubao. Talking to the barkers, … Continue reading My Goddaughter, Charlotte’s 2nd year Birthday
Maybe its not just Philippines, but Asia, or the insanity….the chaos. I see life like a beating heart….and the struggle for a human to create something out of one’s existence. To find themselves. I have blogged in April about the frustrations of Filipinos, today its a bit of the same, with more of a Manila city twist rather then country wide. Foreigners think I’m crazy, and even local Filipinos think I’m insane….but I take local transportation. I have been here since Friday and I still have not taken a single taxi yet this trip. They are hard to deal with … Continue reading Daily Life, Daily Struggle in Manila Philippines
Arrived yesterday afternoon. Been an exhausting week, just so many developments in business…on top of traveling from Shenzhen, China to Dongguan, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and then Manila Philippines… But I am ready to rock next year in 2011! 2010 has been a crazy…exhausting year for me to get outside (I was pretty much 100% in China from 2008 – 2009) see what is going on in the world…network, learn, share….. It feels nice and to be back in the Philippines….its almost a fake feeling from people because the locals are so overwhelmingly nice and friendly. I travel without an exact … Continue reading Back in the Philippines
Guess I am in the right zone…or just following what people are demanding – but more and more people want help promoting the facebook pages, their twitter accounts, improving their reputation online….and building a brand. I am perfectly positioned to do this in the Philippines, and have been working on a more standard package for businesses to talk to me about. AND I LOVE SOCIAL MEDIA, I live it, breath it…..integrate it into my life, and see the power of it. Reading an inspiring article this morning from one of my daily reads, websitemagazine.com here it is: Small Businesses: Facebook … Continue reading Social Media Growing – Facebook Seen As Important to Business
So, its quite obvious I’ve been exploring where to base myself this year of 2010, and while many are jealous I am so free and have so many choices to make freely, it is kind of mind boggling. In the past for some reason, my location has always seemed obvious….I was born in Connecticut, USA and always thought NYC was the place for me, so after high school, I went to college right across from Manhattan….and always targeting getting a job there. While working in New York, I saved as much as I could, and considered MBA, franchise, or start … Continue reading Where to base operations under today’s economic conditions?
Maybe my friends reading this are getting a bit frustrated with me….but now I have decided to take the flight back to Hong Kong (ie China / Philippines) I have been thinking about this since the wedding this weekend…and I guess I have a lot of explaining to do! When I first landed in new york JFK airport a bit over a month ago, I wasn’t planning to stay in USA. I had my return ticket to China from Los Angeles. It has been two and a half years outside of America, and I was overwhelmed with meetings of SEO … Continue reading Taking That Return Flight to Hong Kong…
Every so often I have to reflect, and I’m stressed as well as reflecting on things, so I may as well blog while I have this sleepless time. I always wanted to start my own business, international business just seemed more dynamic and intriguing and challenging, I blogged a few times about past few years – and things started really monumentally changing end of last year, maybe September 2009…..well i went back independent august last year bit power struggle and culture differences between Americans and Europeans which was rather emotional as i had to leave staff behind and in a … Continue reading How I Ended Up Where I Am – More Reflections
In Manila, locals and foreigners agree – CAB DRIVERS RIP YOU OFF! There are so many stories about getting ripped off by taxis here, lets hit a few points: Won’t Use the Meter – They say its broken, or that they don’t want to use it. Some kind of story every time. Choose who they want to take – they will ask you where you are going, and then say yes or no. If they don’t want to go to that side of town, or they think there will be too much traffic there, they will refuse you! Charge extra … Continue reading Manila Taxi Drivers Rip You Off! A Cabbie’s Perspective
Yeap, in Hong Kong airport, going BACK to Philippines. Keep getting the tweets and the texts / calls about how its too dangerous to go, I’m going to be kidnapped, held hostage, blah blah. But really, to be honest, this wasn’t in the agenda, returning to the Philippines, I was planning to stay in China the last 2 weeks until I go to USA. But there is more work and management and organization required in Manila Philippines then I had expected, and I need to settle it before I leave to USA for 2 months. Not too negative or scary, … Continue reading Oh No! Heading Back to Manila, Philippines!
Started getting twitter and SMS messages about 10 hours ago about a hostage situation in the city of Manila in Philippines, involving about 15 Hong Kong people…..so obviously I’m smack in the middle of the political ramifications of this….so I looked deeper. I’m seeing tons of news coverage of it, but this article shows the potential political issues between Philippines and China Philippine police on Monday stormed a bus full of Hong Kong tourists seized by a disgruntled ex-policeman armed with an assault rifle who has threatened to kill his hostages. The gunman, who took control of the bus in … Continue reading Not Gonna Be Good For China / Philippines Relations…..
For my last day on this current Philippines visit, I paid a visit to a local Quezon City job training center. I had visited a couple weeks ago and was invited to come back towards the end of this term’s semester to do evaluations and test them on their english and job interview skills, as well as consider some new candidates for my startup office here. I am always a bad interviewer because I want to hire everyone! I like to see the positive and the good in people, not filter out the “bad”. Sure, its finding the best for … Continue reading Visit to Philippines Training Center, So many great interviews!
Its taken me almost a month to get the courage to eat this….and man…..I usually can eat anything. The staff and the friends in Philippines I have met here keep pushing me to try it, its a streetside dish called “BALUT” in filipino. Basically, its 18 day old chicken eggs that have a baby chicken ready to hatch inside….isn’t that CRAZYYY… So tonight, after a few beers, walking back I decided to get the guts to eat one……Roc Roc, a friend here, prepared the egg for me and prepped me on what I had to do. Basically, first you have … Continue reading Finally Did It, Ate BALUT (18 day old chicken eggs)
